Earnings of farmers mostly come from the product benefits that were largely affected by the weather conditions. Given background of global warming, agricultural sectors are facing various challenges from farming, harvesting to marketing. Establishing a six-grade agriculture industry determines its sustainability.

Yong-shun Tsai participated in this project. He is a youth farmer, moved back from Taipei years ago to start his organic farm, and mainly produced guava and pitaya. He inherited his grandfather’s farm, and decided to maintain his farm as organic as to safeguard his child’s health. He is a senior student in the school for photosynthetic bacteria.

What can a college general education course bring to local industry connection and economic sustainability when it connects architecture to the community? Wishing to do something for remote villages, Prof. Chien Sheng-Fen from the Department of Architecture accepted an invitation from the Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences to offer in 2015 the first field-based general education course— “Humanitarian Architecture in Action.” This endeavor borrowed from the experiences of Chien Chih-Ming (now Chief Executive of the Association of Humanitarian Architecture) when he was in the Humanitarian Architecture Laboratory at National Chiao Tung University.

Professor Jui-Kun Kuo, the project investigator, explained: “The term university social responsibility (USR) no longer means what the university should do to 'help' the society; and, instead, the term is taking on a new meaning as to create an environment of 'public governance' with the society. Universities collaborate with corporations (university social responsibility and corporate social responsibility; USR X CSR) to not only make the corporate social responsibility (CSR) a charity and public welfare, but also include different shareholders to expand social participation and influence together."

Comparable to the Rhine, Cianjhen River was named as “a Black River” as the construction of river cutoff had begun since 1979. Afterwards, Cianjhen and Caoya have been endowed with an elegant water bank. Since 1960s, the ship-breaking industry in Cian Cao area played a crucial role in the economic take-off of Taiwan. Moreover, the first-founded Processing Export Park here in 1966 drastically changed the gender structure of Taiwan’s industries, attracting tons of laborers to boom this area. However, with the trend of globalization and the rise of China’s economy, the manufacturing industries moved off Taiwan; thus, days of glory passed, and Cian Cao was turned into a “Rust Belt” without vitality. Fortunately, a group of the Cian Cao youth followed their pioneers staying Cian Cao and exerted all their strength. They have been fully involved in cultivating artistry, polishing the environment by toughness, and creating another sense of life belonging to Cian Cao.

Why the emergence of a bowl of congee can change the teachers’ existing modes of lecturing and reignite the students’ passion for learning at the same time? The idea of YGC introduce local issues into curriculum, which are about food and nutrition: the local ingredients and the sufficient nourishments for the elderly. USR Project starts with the high-quality seafood, making products like smoked grouper, grilled milkfish, Thai-style grouper, and now nutrition for elderly. The process shows the benefits of teamwork. There are teachers and students from the Department of Seafood Science working on R&D of YGC, and with specific packaging from students of the Department of Industrial Design.

Duona Elementary School is adjacent to a steep mountain wall whose ground slopes downward into the school. Although there is a row of tall hoop pines left to the campus, the curved upward trees indicate signs of land slippage.

The Taiwan government has promoted regional revitalization since 2019 and encouraged young people to return to their hometowns to build a local industry then to shape local production along with ecology and daily life. However, it takes opportunity and courage for the young people to return home. National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology’s University Social Responsibility (USR) program is consequently to utilize “鄰家好漁形塑計畫Excellent Neighbor Fishermen Build-up Project” providing the returning youth with opportunities and courage.
