Company Makes the Growth Sustainable

A highlight can be a spot, an instance, a plain, or a stage. This time, we are sharing the story of a team—from its establishment to its maturity. Fortunately, this project has been able to accompany the team since 2017, from its formation, learning, adjustment, to becoming independent. This team is the Wugong Community Ecological Commentators.

On September 17, 2017, Mr. Pen Kuo-Tong and Ms. Chiu Mei-Lan from the Social Responsibility Project of National Chi Nan University launched the ecology training course in the community for a duration of 14 days (84 hours). At first, nearly 30 people signed up for the training, but only 14 people completed the training and passed the assessment.

These 14 people shouldered the responsibility for commenting and surveying the ecology in the Wugong community. Despite their different occupational backgrounds, they were motivated by their love for the community and their persistence for environmental sustainability to participate in the commentary and ecology investigation.

What touches us the most is that Ms. Su Huei-Ling, despite being the youngest commentator, is currently a community builder at the Wugong Community Development Association.

She is a local from the Wugong community in Puli. After graduating from graduate school, she worked in Changhua for one year, during which she chose to commute from Puli to Changhua daily. Later, with the help of the chairperson Mei-Yu, she served as a community builder at the community association. This job allowed her to enter the world of the community ecology.

Because she was the youngest member, during the training process, she kept asking herself whether choosing this career path was correct. Specifically, when her classmates were striving for their careers, she chose to return to her hometown and devote herself in community ecology. Such a decision has always been a concern in her heart.

With the encouragement and company of our team, Mr. Peng, and other members in the training, she finally let go of her concerns, smoothly completed the training, and became a formal and qualified ecology commentary investigator.

Huei-Ling shared with us that she was most touched by spending 2 years with the other five commentators on a comprehensive investigation of the butterflies in Kunshan in Wugong and achieving rich results. She said, “We persisted only because we wanted to know how many types of butterflies were there in this mountain. To achieve this initial goal, we experienced various hardships in the past 2 years. However, looking back, we were all moved by our persistence.” It was all thanks to National Chi Nan University Social Responsibility Team, chairperson Mei-Yu, Mr. Peng, Ms. Chiu, and everyone who devoted themselves and accompanied them.

The spirit of the University Social Responsibility Project is to integrate the university with the community. Since 2017, our team has been learning and growing together with the Wugong Community Ecology Commentators. In the last 5 years, we have witnessed a group of people spent their time and effort in building community ecology out of love for their community. Because of them, the community becomes better and better.
