Chiba University

Chiba University was formed as a new national university on May 31, 1949, from the then existing educational institutions in Chiba Prefecture, namely, Chiba Medical University, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Chiba University, Chiba Normal School, Chiba Youth Normal School, Tokyo Polytechnic High School and Tokyo Polytechnic High School. Further, the National University Corporation Chiba University was established on April 1, 2004, and Chiba University came to be managed by this corporation.

Chiba University had five faculties (Faculty of Education, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Horticulture, School of Medicine and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences), one research institute (Institute of Food Microbiology) and a university library when it was first established as a new national university. The first graduate school was established in April 1955 and since then, the faculties and research institutes have been expanded and reorganized several times. There are currently 10 undergraduate faculties at Chiba University: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Law, Politics and Economics, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Horticulture, School of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and School of Nursing. There are also a number of graduate schools: Graduate School of Humanities and Studies on Public Affairs, Law School, Graduate School of Education, Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Graduate School of Horticulture, Graduate School of Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Graduate School of Nursing, Graduate Degree Program of Global and Transdisciplinary Studies, Graduate School of Global and Transdisciplinary Studies, Humanities Research Institute, Social Science Research Institute, Science Research Institute, Engineering Research Institute, Horticulture Research Institute, Medical Research Institute, Pharmaceutical Research Institute, Nursing Research Institute, as well as library and medical school hospital. The university also has 22 shared education and research facilities, 14 education and research facilities attached to faculties and kindergartens, elementary schools, junior high schools, and special needs schools attached to the faculty of education. Further, it has been on board in Tokyo Gakugei University Graduate School of Education (Tokyo Gakugei University, Saitama University, Chiba University, and Yokohama National University) since1996 and in the United Graduate School of Child Development of the Graduate School of Osaka University, Kanazawa University, Hamamatsu Medical University, Chiba University and Fukui University since 2012.

As of 2020, the total number of faculty members at Chiba University is 3,402, while the enrollment capacity for undergraduate students is 2,317, and the capacity for undergraduate students is 9,767. The capacity of the graduate schools is 3,008, which is the highest among national universities in terms of scale and content as a comprehensive university.

The campus of the National University Corporation Chiba University is divided into five campuses: Nishi-Chiba, Inohana, Matsudo, Kashiwanoha and Sumida. The Nishi-Chiba Campus is the main campus with an area of 380,000 m2 in Yayoi-cho, Inage-ku, Chiba City. It is located in front of the Nishi-Chiba Station on the JR Sobu Line. Most of the faculties and other facilities are concentrated in this campus. The Inohana Campus is located on the plateau of Inohana, Chuo-ku, Chiba City, where the School of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Nursing and Hospital attached to the Faculty of Medicine are located. The Matsudo Campus has the Faculty of Horticulture, the Kashiwanoha Campus has the Center for Environment, Health and Field Sciences and the Sumida Campus has the Design Research Institute (DRI).

It constitutes ten faculties, namely, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Law, Politics and Economics, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Horticulture, School of Medicine and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and School of Nursing; Graduate School of Humanities and Studies on Public Affairs, Graduate School of Law, Graduate School of Education, Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Graduate School of Horticulture, Graduate School of Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Graduate School of Nursing, Graduate Degree Program of Global and Transdisciplinary Studies, Graduate School of Global and Transdisciplinary Studies, Graduate school of Humanities Faculty of Letters, Graduate School of Social Sciences, Graduate School of Science, Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Horticulture, Graduate School of Medicine, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Graduate School of Nursing, attached libraries, hospital attached to the School of Medicine, twenty-two shared Academic and Research Facilities, fourteen Academic and Research Facilities attached to the faculties, and kindergarten, elementary school, junior high school and special needs school attached to the Faculty of Education.
